Estimating HVAC Equipment Tons (size)
You can determine tonnage of equipment based on numbers that can be divided by 6 or 12. You can almost always find these numbers somewhere in the middle of the model number.
Other factors can also help determine the size. Other considerations should be:
- Sq Ft of the home. New construction may have smaller than average sizes due to efficiency of the construction.
- Electrical amperage requirements. Confusion between 2 and 5 tons can be determined by power needs. A 5 ton unit will need more than 15-20 amp to operate.
- Sizing at the condenser. Air handlers can be up-sized and inaccurate data would be noted if using the numerical configuration at the evaporator unit.
These pages are for reference only, and cannot be guaranteed 100% accurate. Some equipment may require contacting the manufacturer to determine the size, while other units may not have any reference info due to age or the company no longer existing.
Equipment considered designed for "residential use" typically does not exceed 5 tons.
Most but not all larger commercial units can also be sized with the same chart, based on dividing by 6 & 12. (I.E. 10 tons would be noted as the number 120)
A standard numerical chart is listed below for typical size references.
